Photographing a data plate

Take a picture instead of copying digits out of a dark cowling.

Part numbers are stamped small and read in bad light. Where a part’s form offers “Or photograph the data plate”, you can photograph the plate and have the numbers read into the boxes.

How it works:

  1. Press “Upload photo or doc” and take the picture, or choose one you already took.
  2. Press “Read attached data”.
  3. The boxes above are filled in. Nothing is saved yet.
  4. Check every character against the plate, correct anything wrong, then press “Save this part”.

Always check what was read. On a worn plate O-320-A3A and O-320-A2A are one character apart. An uncertain reading is flagged, but a character read confidently wrong is not.

Low light across the stamping reads better than a flash pointed straight at it. The photograph is kept either way, so there is still a record of what you were looking at.
